But the elastic heart of youth cannot be compressed into one constrained shape long at a time. Tom presently began to drift insensibly back into the concerns of this life again. What if he turned his back, now, and disappeared mysteriously? What if he went away—ever so far away, into unknown countries beyond the seas—and never came back any more! How would she feel then! (...) he would be a soldier, and return after long years, all war–worn and illustrious. No—better still, he would join the Indians, and hunt buffaloes and go on the warpath in the mountain ranges and the trackless great plains of the Far West, and away in the future come back a great chief, bristling with feathers, hideous with paint, and prance into Sunday–school, some drowsy summer morning, with a bloodcurdling war–whoop, and sear the eyeballs of all his companions with unappeasable envy. No es fácil volver a este libro (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, 1876) desde el siglo XXI. Mientras ahora los niños son bombardeados con todo tipo de estímulos y espejismos, este libro nos habla desde la era del aburrimiento. Una era sin electricidad, en la que los niños tenían tardes enteras para poner en práctica las fantasías despertadas por 2 o 3 libros, con un grupo de chicos que circulaban más allá de las zonas habitadas sin atenciones constantes de los adultos. Y el hecho de vivir junto al Mississippi tampoco parecía inquietarles más de lo debido.

Mark Twain utiliza los mismos elementos que hacen interesante cualquier novela, pero en proporciones de juguete. A su manera, hay relaciones de poder, hay codicia y hay sexo... pero todo preadolescente, ingenuo. Las "aventuras" son una amalgama de chiquilladas, con la excepción de las consecuencias de la fuga nocturna a un cementerio y el testimonio de un asesinato. Todo lo que rodea a Joe el Indio tiene la brutalidad del mundo adulto indómito.

Aunque a ratos abuurre, el resultado es el retrato de un joven quijote americano, con el asilvestrado Huckleberry Finn haciendo las veces de escudero. Eso sí, aquí la fantasía está vista desde una óptica positiva. Escrito pocos años después de la guerra de Secesión, y sin ninguna referencia al conflicto, debía recordar a todos la importancia de jugar sin más preocupaciones que la propia seguridad.

If he had been a great and wise philosopher, like the writer of this book, he would now have comprehended that Work consists of whatever a body is obliged to do, and that Play consists of whatever a body is not obliged to do.
