Most everybody was on the boat. Pap, and Judge Thatcher, and Bessie Thatcher, and Jo Harper, and Tom Sawyer, and his old Aunt Polly, and Sid and Mary, and plenty more. Everybody was talking about the murder, but the captain broke in and says:
-Look sharp, now; the current sets in the closest here, and maybe he's washed ashore and got tangled amongst the brush at the water's edge. I hope so, anyway.
I didn't hope so.

De pequeño leí "Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer" y vi una serie de dibujos animados inspirada en él. Admito que no entendí gran cosa ni me interesó especialmente. Sin embargo, veo que en el programa de audiolibros en inglés que utilizo, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" es un exitazo. Y sí, el párrafo anterior me hace recordar vagamente algunos personajes.

Tom Sawyer y Huckleberry Finn son amigos. Tom tiene una fuerte tendencia a incorporar elementos de los libros en su vida (la mención al "Quijote" no es casual) y Huck no tiene ninguna intención de convertirse en una persona educada y respetable ni permanecer mucho tiempo junto a su padre borracho. Huck prefiere que le den por muerto y facilitar la huida de su amigo esclavo Jim hacia un territorio en el que pueda ser libre. Huck y Jim, pues, iniciarán un viaje en balsa por el Mississippi.

Durante el descenso del río, Huck topa con las dificultades del viaje y batalla con el ambiente social del siglo XIX y cómo éste afecta al esclavo Jim. Frecuentemente, Huck debe sopesar los valores sociales aprendidos en relación con su propia evaluación de su amistad con Jim y del valor humano de éste. El conflicto moral tiene un claro ganador, la lealtad a la persona por encima de las fidelidades económicas, educacionales o religiosas (ese "All right, then, I'll go to hell!" tiene el sello de los héroes). Pero eso es sólo lo que pasa en la cabeza de Huck, el narrador. Fuera hay más cosas que solucionar.

Esta novela la publicó Mark Twain en 1884, años después de la Guerra de Secesión. Sin embargo, está ambientada en un mundo previo a un conflicto que sin duda tenía un componente racial. Como sobre este tema hay bastante literatura, yo prefiero subrayar otro aspecto notable del libro: la cantidad de mentiras que cuentan los personajes para sacar provecho durante el tiempo que necesitan para ello. Javier Marías diría aquello de "todo tiene un tiempo para ser creído". En el siglo XXI nos sorprendemos de cómo se engañaba en el siglo XIX, pero estoy convencido que en el siglo XXIII no serán muy benévolos con nosotros.

-That's so, my boy- good-bye, good-bye. If you see any runaway niggers, you get help and nab them, and you can make some money by it.
-Good-bye, sir, - says I, - I won't let no runaway niggers get by me if I can help it.
They went off, and I got aboard the raft, feeling bad and low, because I knowed very well I had done wrong, and I see it warn't no use for me to try to learn to do right; a body that don't get started right when he's little, ain't got no show- when the pinch comes there ain't nothing to back him up and keep him to his work, and so he gets beat. Then I thought a minute, and says to myself, hold on- s'pose you'd a done right and give Jim up; would you felt better than what you do now? No, says I, I'd feel bad- I'd feel just the same way I do now. Well, then, says I, what's the use you learning to do right, when it's troublesome to do right and ain't no trouble to do wrong, and the wages is just the same? I was stuck. I couldn't answer that.
