"Murder on the Orient Express"

"It was clear that something out of the common had happened.
“What has occurred?”, he asked.
“You may well ask that. First this snow – this stoppage. And now…”
He paused – and a sort of strangled gasp came from the Wagon-Lit conductor.
“And now what?”
“And now a passenger lies dead in his berth. Stabbed”".

Es una novela whodunnit perteneciente a la serie protagonizada por el detective belga Hercules Poirot. En ella, el protagonista entra a última hora en un tren con un vagón extrañamente abarrotado en temporada baja. El tren se habrá de detener en medio de la entonces Yugoslavia debido a una nevada, pero habrá algún inconveniente más para los pasajeros.

Uno de los ocupantes del vehículo es asesinado en su compartimento. El detective es reclutado por un responsable de la compañía para hacer las pesquisas. Para resolver el caso, el detective deberá hacer uso de una amplia variedad de conocimientos, no sólo para apreciar lo que tiene delante, sino para recordar las circunstancias de un caso escandaloso sucedido en Estados Unidos. Es un puzzle a resolver.

Para llegar a la conclusión, serán importantes conocimientos sociológicos y lingüísticos. A lo largo de la novela se introducen frecuentemente frases en francés, lengua que funcionaba para moverse por Oriente Próximo y la Europa de aquel periodo de entreguerras. “Murder on the Orient Express” (1934) es un hábil pasatiempo, una lectura distraída ingeniosa. Me encanta ese momento en el que se afirma que no se trata de un crimen latino sino de uno anglosajón porque detrás hay un cerebro frío y con premeditación. Cuando viajar era caro, los tópicos de cada país aún funcionaban.
